Industrial
Without proper stormwater controls, stormwater runoff at industrial sites that commingles with industrial products can discharge pollutants directly into nearby waterbodies or indirectly via a storm sewer system.
The federal National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) program has outlined guidance for over twenty-nine different industrial sectors that are required to obtain coverage. As part of the permit requirements, operators must perform routine monitoring and compliance reporting.

Obtaining an Industrial Stormwater Permit requires filing a site-specific Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) with the Notice of Intent (NOI).
The SWPPP should identify the potential sources of pollutants from industrial activities that could pollute stormwater runoff and define the control measures that will be implemented at the facility to minimize discharging pollutants off-site and polluting nearby water resources.
As part of the permit requirements, permittees are required to keep a copy of the (SWPPP) on-site and maintain compliance inspections to report the effectiveness of the selected Best Management Practices (BMPs) that are in place and maintained to minimize pollution to nearby water bodies.
